Taking The Perfect Photo

Don’t necessarily go for a well-known view or ultra-famous place says Fotobuch– a theme which runs through all of these tips is to make your vacation photo distinctive. You need high quality, too, of course, a good sense of composition, and all the rest – but if you are planning on winning a photobook competition, you want your photo to be unique, gripping, and highly memorable. The Eiffel Tower and a tropical beach are both memorable, but individual pictures of them are not. Try to find a quirky, unfamiliar view of a familiar spot – or go for a fresh perspective entirely, finding an overlooked treasure of landscape or architecture.

1. Shoot your photo with dramatic lighting that shows contrasts – once you have chosen your photo “target,” revisit it at several different times of day, as long as you have enough time to spare, of course. You want lighting that makes the scene appear vivid – crisp, clear, with both plenty of light and well-defined shadows that give the objects depth, mass, and weight. If there is some ‘ethereal’ element in your picture, this is all the more important, because its delicacy will stand out all the more.

2. If using an animal, try to get a photo of it in an unusual situation – as with the first tip, you don’t want a living creature in your picture to be simply standing there, staring off into space. Try to capture them in action, or at least sitting or standing somewhere you would not expect them to be ordinarily. An action shot is best of all, of course – you might consider using a human helper, carefully off-camera, to get a reaction from the animal.

3. If using people, exploit the human interest angle – don’t just take a picture of someone standing passively in front of the camera, or accomplishing some neutral, mundane task like walking to the mailbox. Emotional impact is what you want to aim for in order to make your winning vacation photo distinctive – and more likely to win. A child running and laughing, a couple embracing amidst a beautiful scene, or a recreational action shot – carefully posed to appear natural, of course – will bring the viewer into the scene, establish an emotional connection with your work, and improve its competitive chances. Remember that the digital medium allows you many “retakes.”

4. Pay attention to some small, but very interesting, detail – the texture and color of a butterfly’s wing, or the way light plays on the water, are just two details that might enhance the attractiveness of your vacation photo. If you are taking a seaside shot, try to take your photo exactly when a wave is breaking. Emphasize a texture or color, base your photograph on some accidental natural geometry, or use an unusual angle that lets your viewer see the scene from a new, unexpected, and unique perspective.
